Exactly ten years ago, the exhibition “FOLLOW-UP APPEARANCE”, about which only a few friends had been told, opened in Berlin “entirely unexpectedly and apparently by chance”. The show, the title of which referred to Maki Na Kamura’s discreet début on the Berlin art scene the previous year, was announced solely by a large advertisement in a local newspaper, rather than through the kind of invitations that are customary in the art world in Berlin.
In June and July 2015, the Galerie Knoell is welcoming a “GUEST APPEARANCE“ by Maki Na Kamura, who was born in Japan and who is showing her works in Switzerland for the first time.
Under the motto “Whatever one collects“ and to coincide with Art Basel, the artist is showing paintings and water colours that clearly date from the 21st century but that simultaneously make use of rather than succumb to the century’s global fantasies – pictorial spaces that are both traditional and surprisingly constructed as well as disconcertingly used Oriental-Asian (Hokusai) sources, and allusions to the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich and Jean-François Millet, all of which can be sought in her works.
She is a painter who has what it takes to participate in the development of an authoritative understanding of painting. Most of the works exhibited in our gallery date from this year.
Maki Na Kamura came to Germany in the 1990s. Her work is one of the “New Perspectives in Painting” mentioned in the reference volume Vitamin P2 (Phaidon Press, 2011). She is the winner of the “Prix Marcel Broodthaers 2012 – en peinture” and the “Falkenrot Preis 2013” of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. She lives and works in Berlin.
In parallel, the summer exhibition “PEINTURE – SCULPTURE”, which has been jointly organised with NEUE & ALTE KUNST BASEL, is being presented at Bäumleingasse 18 and Luftgässlein 4.
